My Favorite Holiday

Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday. I'm sure this has something to do with my love of food, but it was always a big family holiday for us. I've read a little bit about the history of Christmas, but never really thought much about the history of Thanksgiving except what we all learned in kindergarten. So here are some links to get you started if you are as interested as I am.

Interesting from a living history standpoint for sure.

A classic.

For those who would rather watch than read.

A children's book, but could be useful assuming it's accurate.

Gotta have a cookbook, and this one looks like a good one.

Who hasn't watched this parade at least once in their life?

Of course there are tons of kids books about Thanksgiving, and more books about freakin' Squanto than I care to count. This short list seems like a good starting point. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

PS - Found this today on the Internet. A story that refutes the traditional Thanksgiving narrative (sort of).

Andrew,

Happy Thanksgiving to you and Lori. Tomorrow evening I will battle the traffic on I-95 South out of DC with the hope of reaching Beaufort sometime before sunrise on Thursday.

Tell Lori I am back and will get her questionaire filled out and back to her ASAP.

Planning on sneaking over to Kinston on Friday morning to visit Wise's Forks. I can't go back to NC and not get a little Civil War history in.

Are you all working on Friday?

Wade,
We will not be working on Friday. In fact, we are actually having Thanksgiving with my extended family from Pennsylvania on Friday, as they are traveling south for the holiday. They too are enduring the I-95 traffic today, but much earlier than you it sounds like. I expect them to arrive within the next hour or two. Have a safe trip and nice holiday. If you get a chance, stop by the new Blue/Gray Visitor Center at the intersection of 70 East and 258 South in Kinston. The exhibits are small, but nice.
